NOLA Soul is a tiny New Orleans–inspired soul-food spot at 72 Victoria Road in Govanhill, opened in May 2023 by chef-owner Matthew Major (now sole proprietor after co-founders moved on). The focus has shifted from a broader Southern menu toward fried chicken burgers in homemade milk buns, with buttermilk-brined wings, house pickles and sauces, and beignets finished to order — everything made from scratch in a kitchen the size of a counter. It is walk-in only, open Monday to Thursday from 4pm until 10pm or until sold out; closed Friday to Sunday. Expect a handful of seats (around a dozen at window benches and stools), friendly counter service, and a high chance of sell-outs on busy nights. Chicken burgers run about £11–13; wings and sides keep a meal in the mid-teens to low twenties per person. Soft drinks only on the current menu, including A&W and Jarritos. Ron Mackenna (The Herald) called the fried chicken sandwich possibly the best in the city; Glasgow Live praised the wings and Comeback burger. The room formerly housed Nanika. Pollokshields East is about five minutes on foot, Queen's Park station about ten. In 2026 a fridge failure forced a kitchen rebuild; a community GoFundMe helped Major reopen.
i am from the deep south, so i know southern comfort food. this is the absolute best fried chicken i have had outside of the US. everything was cooked to perfection. the biscuit and gravy was even better than variations i have had in the south. if you’re looking for some good southern comfort food, NOLA Soul will not disappoint.

Read on Google MapsJust tried Nola’s Soul and wow—absolutely amazing! We ordered the BBQ and Buffalo chicken burgers, and they were both packed with flavor and perfectly crispy. The fries were golden and crunchy, and the gravy? Next level. All that deliciousness, and the prices are super affordable. Honestly, why go anywhere else for great fried chicken? Nola’s has it all—taste, value, and satisfaction. Definitely coming back!

We asked for the gumbo to be without pork and they were able to make the sauce without it as well. They do an alternative to fried chicken as well with mushrooms which was really cool. The space is tiny but they manage to make it work.
Read on Google MapsI grew up spending summers in the South in the US, including time in New Orleans as my Dad lived there. This is by far the best fried chicken I’ve had outside of the USA. The comeback sauce was delicious, and the biscuits are very very good too (even nicer than a lot of the ones you get in the states!). Anyone from the US missing southern comfort food, this is a must visit. Amazing service too. Thank you so much!
