Overview

Mitchells is a family-run restaurant in Carmunnock, a conservation village on Glasgow’s southern edge. It began on North Street, Charing Cross, in 1989 and has been at 107 Waterside Road since May 2001. Owners Angus (chef patron) and Veronica (maître d’) are there every day. Head chef Gary Ward, formerly senior sous chef at Rogano, and manager Lorna Sangster have both been there since the Carmunnock opening. The cooking is brasserie-style with a classical French slant and uses seasonal produce. The team visits the markets on Thursday mornings to compile that weekend’s à la carte. What’s on depends on when you go. A brasserie menu (changed every few months) covers most sessions: starters about £8–£13 (haggis tower, home-made pâté, Thai seafood broth), and mains about £17–£24 such as steak pie, venison casserole, panko fish and chips and salmon. On Friday and Saturday after 6pm a weekly-changing à la carte runs, with sample dishes such as Islay scallops with Stornoway black pudding (£35) and fillet steak (£40). Sundays run all day with a roast (£17.95, normally sirloin or rib of beef) and dishes compiled the night before. A set market menu is £19.95 for two courses or £24.99 for three at set times (Wednesday–Thursday, Friday lunch and Saturday 12–4). The site says its menus are samples, so prices may have moved. Practical details: it’s open Wednesday–Friday for lunch and dinner (closed roughly 3–5pm), all day Saturday (to 11:30pm) and Sunday (to 10pm). It’s closed Monday and Tuesday except for pre-arranged groups, and closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Book by phone on 0141 644 2255. There are private dining rooms for birthdays, christenings and funeral gatherings. Reviewers praise the warm owners who remember regulars, the quirky décor with fish tanks and booths, and the heated outdoor canopies. Several note it’s awkward to reach without a car, though a bus stop on Waterside Road is close by.

What a charming and well decorated hidden restaurant. Loved the theme of the decor, very relaxing. Nice outdoor seating areas, car park at back. Menu choices ample with specials. Decent prices. Service was good, loved the glass of water brought to table without asking. Chateaubriand medium ordered, more medium to well in my opinion. Would have liked a bit more blood especially in the centre. Chips were lovely, fish and chips ok, batter soggy though. Would return though to try lunch time menu as the service was good and I really liked the decor.

Maybe not under the best circumstances, we visited after a funeral service. The staff were all very friendly and so helpful and the lunch we had, a mixture of soup, sandwiches, scones and cakes was just perfect. If we are in that area again, we'd certainly go back.

I had steak with peppercorn sauce - exceptional. The waitress was brilliant at advising a friend which whiskey to take with his Haggis and we feel we have been treated very warmly and professionally - it's been a pleasure to be here
