Anarkali is a long-running traditional Indian curry house at 531 Victoria Road in Glasgow’s South Side (Crosshill / Queen’s Park), founded in 1975. It sticks to classic tandoori, curry and biryani cooking rather than modern tasting menus, and Glasgow Live has listed it among the city’s cult curry houses for that longevity and free BYOB. The restaurant is not licensed: you bring your own beer or wine and they charge no corkage — a point repeated on their own site, takeaway menu and in press. Specials are often grouped mild / medium / hot; Glasgow Live flagged chicken shahi masala and the hotter chicken jalander as typical picks. Portions and naans tend to be large; Google-style spend sits around £10–£20 a head before your own drinks. Queen’s Park railway station sits on the same street a few minutes’ walk away. Dine-in, takeaway and delivery are all offered (order online via glasgowanarkali.co.uk when open). The dining room is relatively small, so weekend evenings are worth booking. Vegetarian dishes are on the menu; the restaurant does not advertise certified halal status on its official pages, so check by phone if that matters.
Last week was my first visit to the Anarkali, and it certainly won’t be my last. It’s not fine dining by any stretch, and the décor is dated, but the food is top drawer. Everything we ordered stuck to a winning formula that many Indian restaurants have abandoned in favour of unnecessary innovation, often at the cost of quality. The Anarkali is a traditional Indian restaurant, a real throwback to the past, and all the better for it. Highly recommended.
