Overview
The Buttery stands as one of Scotland's most beloved and renowned restaurants and is thought to be Glasgow's oldest culinary establishment, established in 1870. In 2007, it was transformed into 'Two Fat Ladies at The Buttery,' breathing new life into this historic gem while preserving its authentic Glasgow character. Located at 652-654 Argyle Street in the West End, The Buttery offers a relaxed, old-school ambience where tradition lies at the very core. The dishes showcase the best that Scotland has to offer, celebrating outstanding seasonal ingredients prepared with love and care. The Scottish-infused decor, team attire, and dedication to exceptional hospitality have kept many returning for years. Open Tuesday-Sunday 12pm-9pm (closed Mondays except bank holidays), The Buttery offers a set lunch menu and à la carte options for both lunch and dinner, with final sittings at 9pm. The restaurant provides separate vegetarian and vegan menus alongside clear gluten-free options, ensuring all tastes and dietary requirements are accommodated. The Buttery's commitment to tradition and quality, combined with its iconic status as the city's oldest restaurant, makes it a must-visit destination for those seeking an authentic Glasgow dining experience.

The Buttery never disappoints! This was my second time hosting a team dinner here, and once again, everyone loved it. The private dining space downstairs is such a gem — cozy, intimate, and perfect for team gatherings. Every dish was spot-on (honestly haven’t had a single miss yet), and the staff were brilliant throughout. Andrew deserves a special mention for being so accommodating with both my bookings. Best believe I’ve already locked in our team Christmas dinner here too — it’s become our tradition!
Read on Google MapsMy boyfriend and I are massive foodies and we’ve eaten in some really nice places all over the world. The buttery is up there with some of the nicest. Fresh British ingredients elevated to something very special, everything cooked to absolute perfection. Service was immaculate, wine glasses polished perfectly - such great attention to detail. The one male waiter is an absolute winner (sorry didn’t catch his name) and offered to book us taxis after our meal. Cocktails were fab, staff absolutely make this whole experience fantastic. Thank you so much for a lovely meal, we can’t wait to come back. Very very reasonably priced. We paid £170 for 3 courses each and a bottle of wine and 2 cocktails - the level of service you get here you could only expect from a high end hotel, I was very pleasantly surprised.
Read on Google MapsA place kindly recommended by a proud and authentic Scot for my first trip to this beautiful country and it truly exceeded expectations. If I had to offer a critique, I’d say the décor feels a little dated, and the location isn’t where you’d expect to stumble upon such a rare gem. With that said, these points become irrelevant the moment you experience what The Buttery has to offer. The service was absolutely exceptional. In an age where genuine hospitality is becoming increasingly rare, The Buttery not only sets the gold standard but exceeds it. The staff were warm, attentive, and struck the perfect balance between professionalism and friendliness. It’s clear they take real pride in making each guest feel welcome, and to this, I take my hat off to the team for delivering such a memorable and refined dining experience. The food never fell short. Every dish was presented with care and cooked to a high standard, showcasing real attention to flavour and detail. Nothing felt rushed or overly fussy; just beautifully prepared, comforting food done exceptionally well. A special mention must go to the bread, which is made fresh in-house by their own bakers, which is an impressive touch that sets them apart from places that rely on mass-produced shortcuts. The pricing was also fair, offering excellent value for the quality of both the food and the service. In short, The Buttery was a true highlight of my trip and a top-tier recommendation for anyone visiting Glasgow.
Read on Google MapsMy wife discovered this gem through a quick Yelp search, and we were lucky she did. It turns out this place is incredibly popular and notoriously hard to get into—but she managed to snag us a late reservation, and we’re so glad she did. From the moment we arrived, everything was top-notch. The menu is clearly crafted with care; the flavor combinations are complex, unique, and incredibly well-balanced. I ordered the venison, which was cooked to absolute perfection—tender, flavorful, and paired beautifully with cabbage, potatoes, and an array of sauces and gravy that brought everything together seamlessly. My wife ordered the entrée-sized scallops, and she hasn’t stopped talking about them since. She says it’s the best scallop dish she’s had in her life, and I believe her. Between the phenomenal service, exquisite food, and the antique environment, this was one of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had. I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough.
Read on Google MapsWe ate here for my birthday while away on vacation. As our last day in Scotland; the buttery surely made our dinner exquisite. The service was fast, extremely attentive and very friendly! We enjoyed the venison and it was cooked perfectly! My husband has cooked and managed a steakhouse for many years and truly; this is as one of the best meals he has ever eaten! Thank you so much to the amazing staff at The Buttery for a wonderful experience!
