Fat Hippo Glasgow is the Newcastle-born burger chain’s first Scottish site, at 86 St Vincent Street in the city centre. Founded by Mike Phillips in Jesmond in 2010, the group opened this branch on 16 September 2022; the Glasgow Times reported a 75-cover room and a launch that drew queues for free burgers on day one. The pitch is indulgent, messy burgers and dirty fries — their line is “the good kind of gluttony” — with beef, buttermilk chicken and a marked vegan/veggie range. On the official menu, mains sit roughly in the £12–£15 band and include a free side; the namesake Fat Hippo burger (beef, American cheese, smoked bacon, chorizo jam, buttermilk onion rings and house sauce) is the flagship build, with dirty fries and hand-cuts as the usual side upgrade. Weekday Fast Hippo lunch (until 4pm, dine-in) and Hippo Hour (starter, burger and side for £15, Mon–Fri 5–6pm) keep daytime and early-evening spends lower. StudentBean offers 20% Monday–Thursday. Walk-ins are fine; the site recommends booking when you want a fixed time, and parties of nine or more use the large-group form. There is outdoor seating (dogs welcome there), a kids’ menu for under-12s with high chairs and baby-changing, ramp access and a ground-floor accessible toilet. Chicken is certified halal; beef is not. Across the group, Fat Hippo’s Sloppy Faux won Best Plant-Based Burger at the 2025 National Burger Awards (chef Rob Macdonald) — a chain award, not unique to Glasgow. Diners on Google (about 4.4 from ~1,200 reviews) often praise portion size and the loaded fries; consistency of cook and service gets more mixed notes.
We visited Fat Hippo and were served by Rosa and Carly, who were lovely and super attentive. We had trash browns, the PB+JJ and fat hippo burgers, and tried pickleback shots for the first time, which are such a dark horse! Highly recommend. Great vibes and really nice staff, lovely for a dinner with friends or a second or third date.

Kept checking up on us which made our experience more special! On top of that the food was really good. Specially for the person who eat vegan, I wasn’t disappointed at all! Service was great and I asked for there recommendation on the Plantbased burgers and was suggested to try the NOTORIOUS VFC 2.0 which btw did not disappoint! Probably the best burger I’ve had all year. The fries and side of frickles were a tad under done. Maybe just a one off? However the burger definitely made up for the whole meal. I would definitely return. Very nice staff

Although chicken is not gf, only beef, so the only option for me was the vegan burger. But I really liked it and would defos go again :) Lunch menu is great value (£9.50 for a burger and a side)
Read on Google MapsVisited for lunch a going to cinema with my children. It was a very hot sunny day and we got seated at front window, the sun beating through the window made for a uncomfortable experience, they need some form of sun shade for these rare occasions. The toilets are downstairs, they are clean. The downstairs seating is sir conditioned, if you like to be cool. The food was amazing, generous portions and well presented. One thing to note, if you are asked if you wants sauce/dips be aware some cost extra, didn't notice this until thr bill came. It does mention the costs in the menu, so be aware. Overall, good food, not a 5 star on this occasion.
